Let the diving begin!

Yesterday scientist divers were towed behind a tender on snorkel while looking for a reputed "gigantic" coral head. This reconnaissance around the island of Yap, in giant swells and windy conditions, did not yield the Big Mama of Yap, but this morning we all took the plunge anyway. We were pelted with a real tropical downpour as we geared up the boats and headed out to the reef. The drilling team was able to find some large colonies and seem rather pleased with their results. About 400 meters away from the drilling, our first surveys and coral sampling took place along a stretch of fringing reef on the leeward side. Fortunately, we did not find a lot of disease after approximately 4 hours underwater.
